100 kilometres south of Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway is Rainbow Valley. The journey, mainly along an unsealed track, is recommended for four-wheel drive vehicles only. But it's a journey worth making.
Menindee, a small town with a shop, hotel and petrol station, is situated 1100 kilometres north-west of Sydney. There are small towns like Menindee clinging to existence all over Australia. Many of them contain hidden treasures such as wonderful examples of Aboriginal artwork.
Silverton is located some 20 kilometres from Broken Hill in New South Wales. It has a church, one or two art galleries as well as rusty VW Beatles. The town's one watering hole, the Silverton Hotel, is world famous and has featured in Australian mini-series classic, 'A Town Like Alice' as well as a TV advertisement for beer Casltemaine XXXX. Silverton however is perhaps most famous as one of the key locations for shooting the cult classic, Mad Max. The cast and crew used to relax over cold beers and a game of cards at the Silverton Hotel.
Kata Tjuta, meaning many heads in traditional Aboriginal language, is in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park located close to the geographical centre of Australia. This is the traditional land of Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal people.
