Kyoto is Geisha central in Japan. As all the guide books and literature point out, they are not prostitutes. Rather they are women who have trained for years in the arts of Japanese culture. In Kyoto a fully-fledged Geisha is known as Geiko. Training for up to five years they are known as Maiko.
At 8.15am local time on August 6th 1945 the first atomic bomb to be used in war denoted over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Dropped from a US B29 called the Enola Gay, the bomb known as Little Boy exploded at an altitude of 600 metres almost directly above this building, the Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Promotion Hall. Today it is more commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome. The bomb destroyed over 90 per cent of the buildings in Hiroshima. More than 140,000 people died. Today, the UNESCO World Heritage building stands as a memorial to the people who were killed and represents a symbol of peace.
