At 8.15am local time on August 6th 1945 the first atomic bomb to be used in war denoted over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
Dropped from a US B29 called the Enola Gay, the bomb known as Little Boy exploded at an altitude of 600 metres almost directly above this building, the Hiroshima Prefecture Industrial Promotion Hall. Today it is more commonly known as the Atomic Bomb Dome.
The bomb destroyed over 90 per cent of the buildings in Hiroshima. More than 140,000 people died.
Today, the UNESCO World Heritage building stands as a memorial to the people who were killed and represents a symbol of peace.
